Investment Club in Zambia Invests, It is Not Welfare Club

Warren Buffett's teacher, Benjamin Graham, once wrote. ‘Investment is most intelligent when it is most businesslike.’  The investment club is a business club, not a welfare program; and most definitely, not a merry-go-round.

My club needs to remember that there are consumption clubs, the merry go rounds; and there are business clubs, of members doing business together; and then, there are investment clubs, of members investing together.

An investment club is not a merry go round.

An investment club is not a consumption club.

An investment club is not a business club.

An investment club is invests.

The investment club makes money; it acquires money, and uses the money acquired to make more money. The investment club lives by the ideology of Benjamin Franklin thus:

‘money makes money, and the money that money makes, makes more money.’

But this is only possible when we approach our club as a business, with clear objectives of how much money we want to make, when, where, and what we will give to make that happen. We need a plan, a strategic plan. And we need to stick to it. Those who are not serious: those who do not attend meetings, those who do not contribute regularly, and those who do not participate in research, should be cut loose.

To be rich investors, we must have a plan, be focused, and play to win. An average investor does not have a plan, invests in hot tips, and chases the hot investment products of the day, flirting from technology stocks to commodities to real estate to starting their own business. It is OK to invest on a hot tip now and then, but we must do it with a plan. And this plan should accommodate our personal financial plans; otherwise, some of us will not participate in the clubs activities. Either way, we must plan.

If we are failing to plan, then we are planning to fail.
